Life Inside

Texas Death Row

Living conditions at Polunsky have variously been described as 'appalling' and 'beyond belief'. A friend of inmate Roger McGowen writing in 2004 stated that conditions at the facility are 'deteriorating so rapidly, so much so that some inmates have had their cells inundated during strong rains', and that the 'food is simply appalling' with a daily intake probably around 1600 calories a day, 'which the World Health Organisation describes as the minimum intake for survival'. McGowen, who has been on Death Row since 1987, compiled a book of his letters which was published in the French language in 2003 and provides a fascinating account of life at Polunsky (Messages de Vie du Couloir de la Mort. Jouvence Editions. ISBN-13: 978-2-88353-345-5).
