Helping Karl

Karl in the Media

Karl has attracted attention from the media, more recently because of the debate over the use and legality of lethal injection, and also because in January 2008 he was the only inmate on Texas Death Row that hadn't had a stay of execution following the decision by the Supreme Court to suspend all executions pending an investigation into the use of the three-drug death cocktail.

Help Karl Chamberlain

On May 2, killer Joseph Clark's execution was delayed by 90 minutes as officials sought to find a usable vein for the lethal chemical cocktail. At one point, Clark said: "Can you just give me something by mouth to end this?"

Death penalty foes said the incident showed that capital punishment is cruel.
From now on, execution team members will begin searching for viable veins the day before. "So far, all his veins look good," Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman Andrea Dean said of Barton Tuesday.

There also will be no time limits for executioners to find veins, and there must be one usable vein on each arm before an execution can begin, she said. A low-pressure, constant drip of saline into the intravenous line will test whether the vein remains open.
