At 10 a.m. — when the execution was scheduled to begin (at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility) — the group assembled into a loose circle. The president of Ohioans to Stop Executions, Sister Alice Gerdeman of Cincinnati, read a prayer. Then another member of the group tolled a bell while the rest stood in silence until Sister Gerdeman received a phone call from inside the prison informing the assembly that Barton died at 10:27 a.m.
"Everybody, no matter how heinous an action they have performed, they're still human beings and they need to be mourned by someone," Sister Gerdeman said before the execution. "Every time the state takes a life, I believe that some people need to bear witness to the fact that we do not accept that this is done in our names or in our safety."
